CASE STUDY: WHITE MOSS

White Moss Horticulture is one of the largest green waste composting companies in the UK, manufacturing high quality composts and other growing media made from recycled green materials. It supplies large UK supermarket chains, national retailers, garden centres and landscapers with a comprehensive range of bulk and bagged horticultural products.
The company was experiencing difficulty in sourcing reliable carriers that could offer cost-effective rates. The problem was exacerbated by demands from its largest customers, UK supermarket chains, for day and time-specific deliveries and the company knew that failure to meet those demands would attract penalty charges.White Moss was also a victim of its own success. The business was growing rapidly and its in-house transport department was unable to cope.
Trade Distribution looked at the customer’s transport history and discussed what the company’s future requirements might be. A team was set up and tasked to secure the best rates for the best service and, in so doing, became White Moss’s transport department. Using our network of associates we were able to source suitable sub-contractors and in 2010 we moved 600 full trailer loads throughout the UK with an “on time in full” success rate of 98%.
In less than one year moving from carriers to a full in-house fleet delivered a 20% reduction in logistic costs and an “in full” success rate. Annually 90,000 tonnes and 3,100 full loads were delivered and three White Moss staff freed up and deployed elsewhere in the business.
