Since its inaugural race in 1907, annual the Isle of Man TT Races have developed into the most challenging motorcycle race on the planet.  The 37.7 mile laps including the challenging Mountain Course is made up of endless bends, dips, jumps, and bumps; not to mention an abundance of amounts of telegraph posts, stonewalls and manhole covers to avoid. There is no other race like it – it is unique; a time trial event on public roads. It’s the reason why millions will be tuning in to watch it worldwide and thousands of fans flock to the Isle of Man each year to see the action live.

This year bookings on the Steam Packet are over 40,000 and reservations for the 2017 TT Festival have already broken records with bookings up by 11% on last year. We’ll also be seeing over 13,000 bikes coming over to the Island as well. The influx of visitors sees an increase in the population of the island by 50% for two weeks of the festival and these extra people need feeding; this is where we come in.

Queen scallops, also known as ‘Queenies’ are found in abundance in the sea around the Isle of Man. The Queenies are unique in that they are the only seafood product in the British Isles to hold protected designation of origin (PDO) status. This means that they recognised as being traditionally produced, prepared and processed in its entirety, within a specific region; resulting in a unique and distinctive flavour; in the same way as Parma ham and Melton Mowbray pork pies have protected status.

The fishing season for queenie scallops runs from June to October and Port Erin will be a hive of activity in preparation of handling over 1,000 tonnes of the shellfish that will be caught over the period.

UK-caught queenies are in great demand abroad, particularly in French, Spanish and Italian markets. Trade Distribution plays an integral role for its shellfish processing clients, such as CB Horne and the major fish processor in the North of England; in ensuring that the scallops remain in a temperature controlled environment from while being transported from island to the UK and markets across Europe.

Trade Distribution’s refrigerated vehicles are stationed dockside, ready to load the shellfish straight off fishing boats and into the temperature controlled vehicles, keeping them fresh and full of flavour. The seafood is then delivered straight out to markets or held in our cold storage facilities in Skelmersdale ready to be distributed across the UK and Europe, as requested by our client’s customers’.

Manx logistics company Trade Distribution Limited (TDL), a division of the H&B Group, has been shortlisted for the Partnership Award in the prestigious Motor Transport Awards 2016, for its logistics partnership with AKW Ltd, the UK’s leading supplier of accessible bathroom, kitchen and daily living products.

The Motor Transport Awards, known as the ‘Oscars’ of the logistics industry are a celebration of outstanding achievement in road freight transport, with finalist selected by judges made up of a select panel of industry experts.

Trade Distribution’s selection as a finalist for the Partnership Award is recognition for cultivating a mutually beneficial long term relationship with AKW.

For many years Trade Distribution provided AKW with standard haulage service; delivering products from DLP Ltd, the Isle of Man based manufacturing arm of the business; for delivery to AKW in Droitwich, who manage sales and distribution of products in the UK and Ireland.

In 2012, AKW approached Trade Distribution to look at ways improve the delivery service supplied to their onward customers throughout the UK and Ireland.

AKW’s aims were to reduce:

• damages and lost items in transit;
• the number of late or delayed deliveries;
• complaints and;
• costs for customers and AKW as a business.

Following an extensive collaborate research and analysis programme between Trade Distribution, AKW and their customers’, the development of a dedicated transport network partnership was identified as the most effective solution to achieve the aims.

The introducing of the network partnership rapidly realised benefits; and by the end of the first year it had delivered substantial cost savings, eliminated handling damages and redelivery costs; as well as generating upsurge in customer satisfaction.

The continued success of this collaborative partnership has resulted in several members of the AKW supply chain routing their products through the Trade Distribution/AKW delivery model.

Trade Distribution have recently been rewarded with a new 5 year contract, coming to 2 years earlier than expected.

The winner of the Partnership Award will be announced; together with the other 19 logistic industry awards on the Wednesday 6th of July, at the gala award presentation event at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

Manx logistics company Trade Distribution Limited (TDL), a division of the H&B Group, is continuing to make significant inroads into the UK after it secured a further five-year contract with Isle of Man-based assisted living equipment manufacturer DLP and its Droitwich Spa-based sales and distribution subsidiary AKW.

Trade Distribution’s sales director Hubert Lowry explained: ‘TDL has been carrying traffic for DLP/AKW between the Isle of Man and the UK for more than 10 years and in 2011 we were asked to look at their UK distribution operation with a view to providing a bespoke, upgraded service. After an 18-month project researching and reviewing every function across the AKW business we presented the client with a new, customised proposal, which led to our securing a five-year contract in February 2013.’

‘Such has been the success of the service we’re providing-both from the client’s and the customers’ perspective  – that AKW have awarded Trade Distribution  a new contract for a further five years and they have asked us to undertake a similar project for some of the larger members of their supply chain.’

Mr Lowry said that over the first three years of the contract AKW had reported 100 per cent delivery completion and on-time and damage-free deliveries. TDL’s service, which offered a real-time track and trace facility, had also led to substantial savings in ‘throw away’ packaging and helped to reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

He continued: ‘What’s been particularly encouraging is that thanks to TDL’s new distribution model and its associated benefits to the client AKW have secured incremental business. It’s also fair to say that for TDL the opportunity to work with two such co-operative and progressive organisations such as DLP and AKW has helped us to gain added insight into what is a highly complex industry, which we will look to apply to our growing customer base.’

FoodEx is the UK’s premier trade event for the food and drink processing, packaging, ingredients and logistics industries. The biennial exhibition returned to the NEC in April bringing together the full spectrum of businesses from across the food sector.

One of the organisations in attendance was the Food Storage Distribution Federation (FSDF), the trade association which represents the food and drinks logistics industry. We were delighted to join them at their Breakfast Briefing to hear about the Federation is helping its members understand and address the current areas of concern for the food storage and distribution industry.

It was also a great opportunity to meet up with some familiar faces as well as making contact with new ones; to talk about how we make it easy to transport food and drink products, whatever the temperature; to and from the UK and Isle of Man.
